Although the obvious answer is money, I have found that sales people generally want respect and appreciation or recognition for what they contribute to a company. These days, in a lot of organizations, sales is looked at as a necessary evil and not respected as the driving force behind a companies growth.
To motivate a sales rep, treat them fairly and consistently, provide a great product or service, support their sales efforts and give them a legitimate opportunity to make some money and you will have a motivated sales person. Give them ongoing training and continue to encourage them to develop their personal development and selling skills and you will have a long term, loyal and dedicated sales person.
Just my thoughts after being a sales manager for over 20 years!
